David Johnston is a renowned level designer who began creating custom maps for Wolfenstein 3D at age 10. He later progressed to designing maps for Doom, Quake, and ultimately Half-Life and its modifications, including Counter-Strike and Team Fortress Classic.

Johnston gained significant recognition for his Counter-Strike map designs, particularly the iconic Dust2. His talent caught the attention of Gearbox Software during the development of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero. While still studying in the United Kingdom, he worked remotely for Gearbox, creating two maps including "Tides," which made it to the final game. He also designed levels for James Bond 007: Nightfire's PC version.

During his studies, Johnston managed to create another map called "Sienna" for Condition Zero. In 2007, he joined Splash Damage as a level designer, contributing to various titles.

Currently employed at Improbable, Johnston has stepped away from level design. Though retired from Counter-Strike mapping, his legacy continues through Dust2's enduring popularity in competitive play.
